A ship you cannot lose is cargo. A ship you can lose is a decision. In @GalFiOfficial , fleets are not rented skins. They are player-crafted assets built in-game, owned as NFTs, specialized for exploration, combat, mining, or social missions, and traded on the open market. Early builders get them cheaper while later builders pay more. That already makes a hull a stake in the economy. Then Contested Space opens, and the rule changes, ships can be permanently destroyed. That is the argument worth having. One side says destruction is what makes ownership real. If a Miner cannot be lost, mining is a yield button. If a Fighter cannot be sunk, combat is a leaderboard. Permanent loss forces fleet composition, escort logic, and the choice between a deep-space run and a safe dock. Scarcity stops being a patch note and starts being a consequence. A destroyed ship also pulls resources back through the build loop materials, time, and replacement demand. The galaxy stays player-owned because players keep having to remake it. The other side says a crafted asset that can die breaks the point of owning it. You spent resources, upgraded a hull, and held an NFT that was supposed to be yours. Permanent destruction turns that into a rental with a bad ending. It favors whoever can replace ships fastest, not whoever flew better. New players inherit a frontier where veterans treat hulls as ammunition. Secondary markets get thinner, because nobody prices an asset that can vanish in one bad engagement. Both readings can be true at once. The design only works if loss is legible. - Destruction should be a combat outcome, not a random tax. - Replacement has to stay possible without requiring a whale’s inventory. - Specialization should matter: a Miner in Contested Space is a risk, a Fighter is a tool, a Yacht is not a warship. - Ownership still means something if the wreck, the insurance, or the blueprint remains a player decision rather than a silent delete. So the question is not whether ships should be safe. It is whether GalFi wants assets that appreciate because they are scarce, or assets that matter because they can be spent. If your best ship can die in Contested Space, do you still build it or do you only build what you can afford to lose? #GalFi #Frontiers
